What is the name of your state? Illinois
I moved in with a friend who was living with her boyfriend. He moved out and I signed a brand new lease with her. I just gave her boyfriend the money for the security deposit so we wouldn't have to go thru the trouble of pulling it out and putting it back in. We lived together for 2 yrs we had a falling out because she moved in a new boyfriend. I left but my name was still on the lease. She has since re-newed her lease there. The landlord is saying since she lived there first and there is no record of my paying that the only way to get my money back, is for my roommate to sign a paper signing I paid her the deposit. Now I know my ex-roommate will not do this, we are not on speaking terms. Is there a way for me to get my security deposit back or am I out of luck.

Roommate problems are always awful to deal with.

You may want to file a "small claim" in your jurisdiction, unless you can find a lawyer who would help you for a modest, fixed fee.
