What is the name of your state? Michigan

I have a girlfriend that has a sixteen year old who is a senior. Sarah signed up in the fall to go on the senior trip, a simple form that basically said "do you want to participate in the senior trip?"
Throughout the year, she has had to wash cars, and attend fundraisers. She's done this, even though it has caused a hardship on her mother. Last Monday Sarah was given a list of to-do things: provide two dozen cookies, two dozen brownies, and two gallons of milk, plus $30.00 for an upcoming fundraiser. She must also be available for four hours on Saturday. When her Mom, said sorry, we have plans for Saturday, the school informed her that she would be fined (an undisclosed amount) and she would not be allowed to go on the senior trip. Her mom called the school and asked what amount had Sarah's past efforts netted her toward the trip, and the school told her there was no way to estimate because it all went into a "big pot". Mom was willing to pay whatever was due, but the school refused.
This smells fishy (nothing against fish:) ) to me. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
Thanks

The school can likely set up any criteria they like for what the kids have to do to pay for the trip, as well how many of the activities the kids have to participate in. Mom might want to look into what those requirements actually are, 'cause it wouldn't be unheard of the child "forgetting" she was told that. Did Sarah sign up for this activity (the coming fundraiser)? I'm betting she did and forgot to tell Mom about it.

At the end of the day, Mom & Sarah may have to figure out which is more important - the Saturday plans or the trip. And I'm not quite sure how having her work at fundraisers was a hardship for Mom.

Thanks Stealth2.

The hardship centers around transportation and time. Mom has a full time job, and is also a student. That's basically why Mom just wanted to pay outright and be done with it. Again, thanks.

Thanks Stealth2:

It looks like her only option is to find another form of transportation, since this is a short couple of days before she has to be there for the fundraiser. The "other plans" are down the hole too, and of course they aren't too happy about it, but guess that's the way the cookies, and the brownies crumble:rolleyes:
