SS Disability - Conflicting letters on the same day

Hello,

I received two letters from SS, both dated and mailed on the same day, from the same address, with the same regional commissioner's name at the end. Both cite the same SS doctor's exam I was required to attend.

One letter states I have been medically approved for SS disability benefits, and non-medical requirements are currently being assessed.

The other letter states I have been medically denied SS disability benefits, and even though they realize I cannot do my past work, I should be able to do "light work" that is less demanding.

Of course I didn't get these until Friday evening, so I can't check with SS until Monday.

Any idea what's going on?

If you can ,take both letters to your local SSA office and speak to a Rep. there .If need be ask for a supervisor to look into it.

I was just wondering if there was any chance of a guess whether I was denied then approved, or vice versa (or whatever?).

Got very little sleep last night, and probably won't get much until I find out.

Understandable.

Sometimes SSA just gets things off .

A wrong key in code by a worker,etc.

Sometimes a denial letter is just their way of fixing things in their system,followed up by an approval.

You really won't know until you get it straightened out .

I'm NOT an expert but from a legal point of view if they did deny you I would make very sure not to give up that letter of approval. It may come in handy to the attorney handling your case if you have to go that route.

I could see a situation where you go down to the local SS office and hand them both letters and the clerk puts your approval letter in the shredder and hands you back the denial letter and says they are sorry but it was a mixup and your denied. Then you get a lawyer later on and he tells you he wishes you'd of kept that letter for him to look over.

Again Im NOT an expert but I wouldnt throw that letter away if they deny you. At least make a copy of it and even if its not useful a copy is like 10 cents.

Also on a personal note don't lose sleep over it. I know you feel as if your life depends on this but as long as you have access to food and shelter from the rain you will survive I promise you that. I have been to the bottom and even slept in my car for 2 weeks. I survived and today I have a nice house, loving wife, and if I can make it out of the hole anyone can. I'm not gonna lie and say it will be easy and it will probably take years but you will overcome and adapt.

I realized long ago that shelter, food and family are all we really need to survive. Fancy cars, flatscreens, and internet are nice but you wont die without them.

Thanks for the replies. I do intend to keep that approval letter safely in my possession, as it indeed seems like something a lawyer would want to see.

We're in no danger of repo or eviction at present (thankfully), but the SSD would certainly be a huge help. Hopefully we can find out something definite tomorrow.

Btw, I actually managed to get a bit of sleep here and there.

DENIED.

Both letters show up in my file, but the approval letter was alledgedly a mistake.

Not sure how such a detailed mistake could be made (the approval letter includes details of my health problems), but I've already contacted an attorney.

It's a shame the words "government" and "incompetent" are practically synonymous.
