What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? MD
When it comes to the state saying I owe money, I usually don't question it. However, the state of MD has taken my tax return and is billing my husband $10,000 for car insurance on two vehicles from the years 1998 and 2002. He has proof of insurance on both vehicles, but when his now ex wife moved out of state, she changed the insurance billing address to that state although one of the vehicles was still located and registered in MD. Also, one vehicle was traded in to a car dealership that apparently did not report the vehicle as sold. We are trying to fight this, but we are also trying to sell our house and I don't want a lien put on it if this remains unresolved.
By the way, what right does the state have to get what would normally go to the insurance companies? Do they get a cut?
Any advice out there???
