My niece came to visit me in Hawaii (from ROK)and decided to stay as a student. She had her status changed from visitor to F-1. She has graduated high school and is attending college (Now in N.D.). I've heard she cannot return to the U.S. if she travels out-of-country. Is her F-1 status the same as a person who applied outside the U.S. and then entered? Can she obtain normal F-1 status so she can travel to Korea during school breaks? I've also heard she would have to travel to the closest U.S. embassy (Mexico or Canada) to obtain an F-1 visa. In this case I'm afraid she would be denied re-entry into the U.S. She has no document showing proof of her status change, however, INS personnel at the border found her status change in the INS computers. Thanks in advance for any help!!
