 What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? IL

I just received a collections agency call for my 5 year old son.
When he was born we paid all the bills right away. Now 5 years later the hospital is saying there are two open bills ($700). I am seperated from the father and have legal guardianship.
However back then our son was on the father's insurance which I have no access to.
I know for sure we have not received these bills in the past or ignored them, I am currently not in a position to pay this bill. On top of that I can't even find out, if it had ever been send to the insurance company.
Can they send a bill after 5 years?
Since I have sole custody will they be able to put this on my credit? Can they put it on a child's credit?
I gave the collections agency the father's contact and insurance details, but I know he will not take care of it as he does not pay support either.
I always pay my bills, but I can't even confirm accuracy of these bills.
Thanks for your advice.:)
