You might want to see about finding an attorney who would consider a payment plan.

I'm appalled she thinks this can be done in a month or so!!!

Lady, get an attorney!! Dad consenting now, isn't a race for time!! The adoption isn't just walking into the courthouse and walking out a new parent. Dad will have time to change his mind in the process. Lots of time!

"I need to hurry up and get the papers signed RIGHT NOW before dad changes his mind" is EXACTLY what the system is in place to prevent. They want dad to have a chance (many chances) to change his mind and be absolutely positively 100% certain that he wants to sever all legal ties to his child forever and ever.

It sounds to me that he is NOT sure and you are pressuring him. Cut it out. Save your money, wait for your 1 year anniversary, hire a pro.

If I don't get the process started soon, he could have a change of heart in the next month or so. That is the kind of person he is. Saving up 4 grand for an adoption attorney, when I have legal on my side, doesn't seem vital to me.

OP, NOTHING in family court (outside of maybe CHIPS) gets done in in a "month or so". Heck the rules of service alone dictate that you pretty much couldn't see the inside of a courtroom in under a month.

Dad is going to have plenty of time to change his mind--as it should be.
