What is the name of your state? NEW YORK!!!
i have sole custody of my kids, and their father has no rights to visitation per our court order. he gave me custody and gave up his visitation rights 3 years age. since then he has had contact witht he kids until november when he moved out of the state without telling anyone. he has not worked steady or had a home of his own since our divorce 4 years ago. i have been my childrens' sole caretaker most of their lives. he has now come back from out of state to visit his family and is trying to see the kids. he has a long history of domestic violence and is a very unstable individual, all of which the courts are aware of. i am sick and tired of him attempting to put my kids through this mess, when all they want and need is peace and stability. i want to file a petition to terminate his parental rights, but have no idea about how to do so, and i can't afford a lawyer. any suggestions, or resources anyone can provide. thanks

have you remarried? without a stepfather to adopt it seems like it pretty hard to terminate parental rights. does he have a visitation order?

i haven't remarried

but i am engaged to a great guy who loves my kids. i know this sounds crazy, and although i know my fiancee would never abuse me or my kids, i have a little problem. my ex husband abused me for almost 8 years, and so i am being very careful in this relationship. my kids don't even talk about their dad anymore, like they used to. they are happy and contented in our current situation, and so am i.

Ny state requires that two parents be responsible for the children. If your X would even agree to terminate his rights voluntarily, you would still have to married for at least one year for that to qualify.
