Thinking about filing bankruptcy

Can someone please explain what it means to file bankrupcy? I'm completely naive when it comes to this subject. When you file do you still have to pay back your debt or do they reduce what you have to pay? Is it true you can no longer claim credit card debt when filing for bankrupcy?
