What is the name of your state? Florida
A relative whom I lived with almost 4 years ago is getting messages on his answering machine. The message states something like" This message is for ....this is ......Im representing the Check Enforcement Bureau. You could possibly be charged with violation of state statues for check fraud and theft by deception." Then they proceed to give a toll free number to contact them and an assigned case #. My relative freaked and called me long distance. I'm now residing in Georgia. He said I should contact them to see if the they will indeed make criminal charges against me. To my recollection I had no outstanding checks in Florida, but did fail to repay 2 Payday loans, where you use you checking account as collateral. It wasnt fraud I had done several with the same company and paid them. This was in 2001 and they have already entered a judgement against me (its on my credit, showing Charged off). Should I respond? What can my relative do to keep them from hounding him?

Your relative can call them or write a letter to them telling them to cease and desist. We just went through this with Academy Collection Services in Philadelphia with a family member who has not resided with us in over eighteen months.

As well, we contacted the ACA and the Pennsylvania Association of Collection Agencies, the Federal Trade Commission with a complaint and the Better Business Bureau in Philadelphia.

The next call I get, it will be to the local police department for annoying and harassing telephone calls and violation of wiretap laws.
