So I live in Colorado. Apperently less than half a year ago a state trooper was hit on the highway and killed while having someone pulled over. Apperently it's now law to get into the farthest lane. I was not aware of this when I passed a trooper today citing a ticket to someone else and he came and pulled me over. Told me about the law and screw me for being honest I told him I wasnt aware that was the law now. I told him it's my right but its not my responsibility to go around searching for what traffic laws are being changed while dealing with the day to day. Giving tickets doesn't prevent the actual accident it just induces fear mongering. His response was that this ticket punishes bad driving implying that my driving was bad when less than a year ago it was considered acceptable? I refused to sign the ticket and he just walked off.

What can I do? Can I fight it? Should I? Is it worth the effort? I understand that "I didn't know" doesn't hold much water in court, but I know there were also cars to my left making it hard for me to actually merge over and that cop was on the passenger side of the car he pulled over so he didn't even have a good angle to see. What do you guys think?

I think the "there were cars to my left" is nonsense, or that's what you would have told the trooper as to why you didn't get over.

Your state's "move over" law was enacted in 2005. Your bad driving hasn't been acceptable for over a decade

Ignorance of the law is NOT an excuse. You are guilty. End of story.

Typical response from someone who doesn't like that fact that he was caught.

I understand that "I didn't know" doesn't hold much water in court...

You're wrong... it doesn't hold ANY water in court.

...that cop was on the passenger side of the car he pulled over so he didn't even have a good angle to see.

Total BS. You really are clueless. Try that argument in court and see where it gets you.

It actually IS your responsibility to do just that. Law changes are accessible to the public and it absolutely is your responsibility to be aware of the changes so that you adhere to them.

No you guys are wrong sorry. I'm going to fight it, get it thrown out, not pay a dime, and get off as not guilty.

You guys actually don't know anything about rights.
