What is the name of your state? His is Mass
I know a friend who just started to draw unemployment after being let go after more then 30 years at one company b/c they got a new contract and needed to get new people. Anyway The way I understand it with unemploment there is you make a phone call every week and answer yes or no questions. One of the questions they ask is did you make any money this week? He has real estate he owns in another state that was willed to him by his parents which makes money in stocks, bonds and dividends each month but it goes straight into the Estate.
Is this money he should report? They don't have a live person to talk to on that machine and getting a hold of them is a great task..
I hope Im putting this in the correct area as I couldn't find one closer to this topic. Thank you in advance...

If the question is did they "earn" and money, then the answer is "no". If they are unemployed under the circumstances describet they should make an EEO complaint on age discrimination. Were they given a buy out and/or early retirement?

I will pass this info on. I only know that after 30 years he was asked to leave along with others to get others in there with degrees when these guys new the computers they used better then anyone.... Thanks i will give him the link here...

I'm by no means as certain as Ms Cupcake that this would qualify as age discrimination. If the job has been restructured due to the new contract and he does not have the skills for it, it may be perfectly legitimate.

But if he feels that he was laid off BECAUSE OF his age, he is free to contact the EEOC or MCAD.

We ony have this third hand but it would seem that it was a matter of degrees not knowledge or skill. But if the friend had been ther 30 years then age might be a part of it. However, with the added information re computers, I might add that: in the field of computers and engineering, many have a disorder known as Asperger's which while they may be very computer knowledgable, they are not very adaptable and don't proess abstract information well, which may lead to rapid breakdown in midlife when challenged with change. It is entirely possible, once an job is lost or significantly changed that if they have Asperger's, if will be difficult to find similar work again without great difficulty and constant supervision. So her friend may have been displaced for reason of age or the common preception that older workers in the fields of engineering and computers do not adapt well to change because, many do not. If your friend is up to date and adaptable to change he should be ok, he may still have some eeoc or other recourse.

I don't deny the possiblity of age discrimination. But you are making a hell of a lot of assumptions on the basis of a one paragraph post. That same one-paragraph post does not contain anywhere near enough information to support a definite claim of any kind of discrimination.

Agreed, I only mentioned that there may be recourse because of age discrimination, OP doesn't know all the facts because it is a friend. The other problem is that if for some reason employment is difficult to obtain, since they have another source of income from a trust, they may need to access that income.
