What is the name of your state? Loan was granted in Oklahoma. Currently live in Quebec, Canada.

Hi,
My question is regarding my husband's educational loan in US. He is a US citizen, but lives in Canada as permanent resident since 2000. He is repaying his federal educational loan received in Oklahoma. Living in Canada, it's hard to pay in US dollars, and we do not get any tax breaks.
I was wondering if he just stops repaying, what will be consequences? We are not planning to move to US or apply for any financial loans in US. Can they make us pay somehow?

Also, may be somebody knows if there is a way to transfer this debt to Canadian institution? Would it still be considered student loan, so he can get a tax break?

Thanks to everyone who replies!

I used to collect student loans. It didn't matter if you lived in Bangledesh. I would simply forward it to a branch of my company in that country. There are agreements between nations especially the US and Canada on lawsuits. I don't think that it will be that easy to get out of paying. Sorry.

I'm not sure what actions they can take against your husband while he is in Canada (hopefully a lawyer will pop in and give you some advice).

The problem is, these loans won't ever go away. They have no SOL, and who knows, you may end up back in the states someday with this thing hanging over your head... You/your husband will eventually have to pay these, and the longer you wait, the greater the interest and fees will become.
