Hi -

I'm getting a degree in a few months and would like my diploma to reflect both my maiden name and my married name. I do not want to change my first name or my last name. I just want to insert my maiden name where my middle name would ordinarily go. Is this legal?

Thank-you.

**A: what did the school tell you when you made such a request?

The school said to axe the question on this forum.

**A: Oh, in that case the answer is no. The name on the diploma must be in the legal name of the individual that earned such degree.

**A: I just double checked to be sure and I am right. Mine says "HomeGuru, Juris Doctorate".
Mine says

There's a nifty seal and ribbons and something in Latin.

What name have you been going by since marriage? Did you change your name with Social Security and DMV? What name is on your drivers' license and social security card?

When I got married, I finally got rid of a middle name that I hated and had my drivers' license and social security card to my new married name: FirstName MaidenName LastName .

Ask the registrar's office at your university if you can change your records to have your maiden name as your middle name on your official college records.

Mine came in a large wooden crate and says;

Canis Latrans, Lawn Doctor, Acme Lawn and Law Correspondence School, Walla Walla, WA.

With this new Screw the Patriot Act, just wait till you have to renew your driver's license.

Better be collecting those documents now!

They probably won't care if you have "Deputy Dog" written on your diploma, but you'd regret that later. Your diploma isn't a legal document. Your transcripts are another matter. If you want a different name on your records or diploma...go talk to the registrar's office!

BTW: my mother used that combination for over 50 years. That may have been because her initials were FKM before marriage. ;)

**A: a diploma is not legal?
