What is the name of your state? California

Hi! I bought a vehicle from a person names Chris, a 2001 Lexus 2001. The car is under his ex-gf's name and he said she left and gave him the car, the registration paper, but she still has the title. The car has also been into an accident. I went to Las Vegas to pick up the car and i got him to sign the bill of sale and handed me over all the regisration papers and he did all the registration paper for the State of California. So basically he signed the car over to me. I drove the car back to california and i got the car fixed which is costly and everything is good to go. I tried to register it at the dmv and it said i need the title from him. So i called him and told him i need the title from his gf and he said he tried to get it but he found out the dealership has the title still because the vehicle was not paid off. He told me when he sold me the car, he didnt know about this. So he told me there is no way he or his ex can get the title from the dealership since she still owes an estimate $14000 on the car. But if i cant get the title, i cannot register the vehicle in the state of california. He said i should tried to change the vin number but i told him would not do it because its illegal and what if the dealership wants the car back beause she cannot payoff the car. So i want some legal advice. What should i do now? What happend if his gf cant pay off the loan, will they take the car away from me? i purchased the car for $3800 but i put on the dmv paperwork as $1200 so will i get the full amount back. I spent about $6000 to fix it up so will i get that amount back? What do i need to do next? Any help is greatly thankful. Thanks

You bought a 14K car, from someone who did not even have his name on the title, for 3800. Now you find out it was a scam. And he "never knew she owed money on the car".

Dude, your butt must be sore, because you got reamed!
But then again, I have no doubt you thought, "WOW! This is my lucky day, I am buying a car from someone who does not own it for about 25% of it's value!!!" And never once thought it was not legit...
Yea, RIGHT!

What do you expect with a story like that?
1. A 14K car is being sold
2. The person selling it doesn't even OWN it
3. The selling price is 25% of what the car is worth
4. The seller (who doesn't own it) has no paperwork to transfer title
5. The car has significant damage
6. You never bothered to check the story out

Frankly, you deserve to be ridiculed for doing such a dumb thing. You honestly mean to tell me that the thought of the car being "hot property" never ONCE crossed your mind???

SSSUUURREEEEE........

Like i said, im just here to help some help. Your comments dont help me with anything so why waste your time posting it? But to answer your questions, the car was heavily damaged and its value would be around $4000-$5000. Thats why i bought it for $4000. He told me his gf has the title so i was lied to and didnt know about it. Currently, i got good advices from other forums. One solution is ask him or his gf to continue with the payment of the car until they finish it off? My question is if they do this, will i be able to drive the car still? If he doesnt agree to do so, the worst case scenario is take him to court and get my money back. Other peopls comments stated i have been screwed and i must be hurt and stuff. I mean it is not like i am going to give the car back and thats it, theres nothing i can do to get the car or my money back. Thats why i went to this forum for advice but i guess this is a joke forum. But either way, thanks for reading my story and hopefully someone else can help me and any helpful advices are highly appreciated. thanks

You didn't actually purchase the car since he wasn't authorized to sell you the car since he wasn't its rightful owner. Until the lien is paid off, the title won't be released. You need to sue him in court to get your money back, as well as what you paid for repairs. You may be able to get the $4000 back, but I'd kiss the money you spent on repairs good bye. Right now, you're basically driving somebody else's car and their friend has your money. Not a good situation to be in. You need to be dealing with the girlfriend, not this guy. Have you talked to her? Everything he's telling you could be made up. You could even be driving a stolen car.

thanks jones for your good information. I will try to contact his gf and talk to her and see what her plans are. I will post an update and let you know and we will go from there. THanks again for your help.
