What is the name of your state? CA
Two weeks ago my husband had a heart attack. He spent 10 days in the hospital (8 in C.C.U) and had a pacemaker put in. We do not have medical insurance and do not qualify for state assistance. He is undocumented (Canadian). We have been struggling for the past two years to pay bills and have made arrangements with several credit card companies to make reduced payments. Hospital bills are estimated at 75,000.00- 100,000.00. We are barely keeping our heads above water as it is and can't afford anymore "payment plans". We are young and do not want to ruin our chance of buying a home in the future.
What would be our best course of action? I am very confused and stressed!
Any help would be appreciated

Sorry, forget about the Canadian debt.
What can be done about the hospital bills and other debt that we have in California? This is where we live.

I have edited my original post to remove info about Canadian debt.

Ignore 'Kwalla'. He doesn't realize that California is not in Canada...... or assumes that a Canadian citizen isn't subject to US laws.

*** Needless to say, there are no easy outs for this one. The only thing that appears available is to file bankruptcy and try to get those debts discharged. Then, hopefully, you may be able to purchase property in the future.

Can a US resident discharge foreign debt? If not why are the Visa/MC still in the US.

The Visa M/C debit are mine, I am a U.S. citizen. The hospital bills are for my undocumented, Canadian husband, who got sick and was hospitalized in the U.S. (california).
It is a very long story as to why he is here undocumented. I know this is messy but I appreciate any advice.
