My ex spouse and I formerly lived in Maine with our 3 children. We separated in 1999. We did not go to court for child support, but I agreed to pay $1,050 child support per month plus take over ALL of the debts, which were quite substantial, and they are still not paid off fully. An agreement was registered with the court in Maine, as well as a child support order.

In order to pay the amount of child support, I had to get a better job, and moved to New York for work. I have never missed paying child support ever. (although I sometimes lived on $10 a week remaining for myself)

A year after I moved to New York, my ex-spouse moved with the children to Pennsylvania to be near her parents. This was good news for me as I could now see the children on a weekly basis. She is remarried in Pennsylvania.

In 2002, I married my Canadian wife, and I now live in Ontario, Canada (although still have regular visitation). I am still employed in New York so that I can pay adequate child support and medical expenses. This is very expensive for me to do for various reasons including the cost of travel, border bridge fees, etc.

My question is this. Which state (or country) should I contact in order to have child support modified? My oldest daughter is 18 now, and the other children are getting up there too. I need to have this straightened asap. Thank you for any assistance you can offer.

If you modify it will go by PA standards if she modifies--she may have a more difficult question.
UIFSA--interstates says that if you modify it must be done in the state that can do the enforcement of the order.
If both parties are in agreement it could be handled in your home state--say NY.

You file in Maine  Otherwise, you'll first need to seek Domestication of the existing order in Canada or Pa. Then file for jurisdiction and THEN for a modification ceasing support for the oldes child.

Neither party lives in Maine any longer.
I was married in MT and then lived in WI, FL(where I divorced), Maine, and now NC.
My case has always been interstate.
My ex lived in TX after the divorce.
We divorced in Florida and they had the case until my ex wanted to have it modified. It then had to go to NC. I know because the child support attorneys in Florida fought hard for me to keep it in Florida so I could keep consistent payments coming in.
I am currently not receiving any because of course the case was not registered in NC by his attorney properly and now I have to go through the very slow process of accepting it here.
Florida can't take it back because they have no jurisdiction because there is no party to this cause in the state.

And in case you haven't learned by now, YOUR case has nothing to do with this one.

And frankly, I DON"T CARE.

I know you don't care--you just want an opinion and opinion is not law.
I am currently in the middle of questioning every bit of the law.
My ex lives in DE, works in MD is paid out of NJ and I live in NC
This does matter when it comes to applying interstate cases and the law.
