You are so right. We don't say negative things about the women our little
boy lives with but he says "they lie". Children are smart. When they get
old enough then they can choose who they prefer to be with. His grandmother replied to a question about whether she said something. She
said, "No, and have I ever lied to you?" His reply was a big hug. He knows
who really loves him and who is honest. :)

This statement is not true. In most states they can state their preference but a judge is ALWAYS the one in charge of it and the kids preference might pull SOME weight but is FAR FAR from what the judge bases things on.
