Actually, it is the "offending people" part that you need to worry about. Those who are offended by the contents of your book may not look in the mirror but rather they might look for a lawyer.

I understand what you are saying. But sometimes you have to rip a band aid off and let the wound breathe in order to heal. I spent my entire life protecting these people. And in a way, I'll still have to protect them when I write the story, unless they all die before I publish it.

Why do you think so many write about their abuse stories? Why do you think there are so many books on the shelf? Not everyone feels the need to do this, but those of us that do, well it's cathartic, but many of us hope that we reach someone, help someone, educate someone.

Another alternative could be to simply cut the tumor(s) out of your life...

You're not protecting THEM if you change names, etc., rather, you're protecting yourself.

I wish it were that easy. Right now I have the unenviable task of caring for one of my abusers who is elderly, in poor health. I placed him in Assisted Living but I am his POA. I have excised as much as I can from my life.

Will I do as I please. Yes I will. But I will also make sure it is done within the confines of laws and within reason.

When you are responding to someone dealing with an abuse situation, you might want to hold your tongue a bit and think about the ramifications your tone may have on that person. They most likely have already dealt with rejection, belittling, and other blows to their confidence. They fact that they are taking a chance by coming here and asking questions is testament to the strength they don't know they possess.

Nice enough. I don't worry about your ~feelings.~ Dr Phil does that.

On this forum, we can say things that are not going to result in a lawsuit because all of us are (relatively) anonymous. When you publish a book about real people from your life however, whether these people are identified by name or identifiable by the content, you do not have the luxury of saying whatever you want. You risk having legal action taken against you.

Nobody here has falsely claimed to be an attorney. I'm glad that you have decided to have your project reviewed by a local attorney who can review it in full and not just act on your generalized questions.

I hope the "real" lawyer you found is well-versed in publishing law (and its related legal concerns). I cannot imagine the lawyer advising anything different from what you heard here if he is - but it is smart that you are seeking advice on your book from an attorney in your area.

Again, I caution you to watch your words and your tone when writing. You risk drawing the ire of those who are featured in your book otherwise. Please take my suggestion to have any manuscript professionally reviewed prior to publication. And be sure you are insured properly.
