Latest experience I had with this, was son was divorced last year, his wife carried health ins. According to her lawyer, she could not legally remove him off her insurance until divorce was final, and she had to submit a copy of decree to her employer. This is in GA

I say stop payments on those checks now. The cost of doing that will be small compared to what you will incur if you pay them, open a new bank account if possible and close that one out. As CM Chase said, send them that letter. They need to know that not everyone falls for their scare tactics...

I thought that if you received an inheiritance, it was not taxable up to a certain amount? If so, what would that be; does it also depend what state you are in? Or does this even apply in a case like this?

Not sure if it would happen in your case, but in mine, we did a Petition to Partition, and we are still trying to settle it going 2 years and it has been a nightmare for us. Depends on how competent a lawyer you have and how your brother reacts to the Petition. In our case the greedy ones...
