But if it is the question that my wife always had about them back when she was a bridesmaid the answer is no, there is no law that requires them to be ugly.

Although I could be wrong, I suspect the legal question is not about ugly bridesmaid dresses. ;)

Bridesmaid Dress

I apologize, my original message did not post correctly.
Yes, my post was in reference to being sued for the cost of a bridesmaid dress if I drop out of the wedding party.
The mother of the bride offered to pay for all dresses including bride, bridesmaids and flower girl. She referred to it as a “gift” from her to us.
I have since decided to not take part of the wedding. Can I be sued for the cost of the dress? The wedding is not scheduled until May 2018.

Price

Also, the price of the dress was around $180 if that makes any difference, I’m not sure.

Have the dresses been made yet? Has the mother spent any non-refundable money on the dress?

Can the dress be altered to fit a possible replacement?

Yes, you can be sued but whether the mother will prevail is based on what I asked as well as other questions not asked yet.

Thank you for returning to fill in the details.

If the dress cannot be returned because it has already been fitted, the mom potentially could sue to recover the cost of the dress. The bridesmaids' dresses could be seen as a gift conditioned on participation in the wedding.

Even if it has been fitted, unless the OP is of an extreme size one direction or another, the odds are greater that it can be resized to a new person that not.

...the costs of which should be paid by the exiting bridesmaid.

Nope...just wanted to let people know that the fact it had been sized would not necessarily preclude it being used by a new bridesmaid.

Sure. The bride's mom potentially could find another use for the dress if it can't be returned. But she also could sue.

That said (and based on very little knowledge of the whole world of brides), I don't think bridesmaids dresses are altered until shortly before the wedding (to accommodate for body changes?). I know my wife was to be a very pregnant bridesmaid for one friend's wedding and she wasn't fitted for the dress until a couple of weeks before the wedding. If the wedding Kelp was to be a bridesmaid in isn't until May, there is a good chance the bridesmaid dress is returnable and the cost refundable (unless it was custom made).

As a note: My wife went into labor the night before the wedding mentioned above so she never had the chance to wear the dress. I think the dress, fitted as it was for her size at the time, could have clothed TWO other bridesmaids. :)
