What is the name of your state? TX

I am aware of somebody who has copied hundreds of rental DVD's for use at his house. First, is this legal, my thought is it is not. Second will any law enforcement agency care? Who would I contact? Can only the owner of the copyright be the one that pursues someone? Is this a criminal or civil issue? What proof is needed to give to authorities?

Thank You
MS

The Motion Picture Association of America would be real interested in talking to this person, check out the anti-piracy page and click on the rewards link. You could make a bit of cash off this guy.

Is he just using the DVDs for his own personal use?

Your question is totally out of line, read the OP. It is illegal to make copies of DVD's you do not own, period.

Both of you don’t know the basis of my question/inquiry, so until the OP answers the question and I give my response, please do not make assumptions to the merit of my question. I did not direct the question to either of you, and I certainly did not rebut your previous post racer72.

And I am telling you and the others that read this thread that your question has absolutely no merit and does not need to be answered. HomeGuru concurred. And I will ask you, as it does appear the OP in not going to respond again, how does your question relate to those asked by the OP?

First of all, you are blowing my question out of proportion and context. Everything has some relevance to a case (e.g. level of civil liability).. How is this question “totally out of line?” Look through all the responses from others on this board, and you choose mine to designate as being out of line (idiot). I have personal interests in regards to my question. I might be able to put the OP in contact with someone. If his friend is just a 15 year old boy making a couple of DVDs for his personal use and not for profit, I, nor my contact, would have little interest in pursuing him. Is that alright? If I was refuting your initial response, you would have grounds to respond to my dissent. However, I never did anything of the sort. What the hell are you even arguing about? Think about it. Are you just being argumentative just because you can? You’re implying that my question is based on something it isn’t. Grow up.

**A: we do not need to know since your question is not relevant to the salient issue under discussion. The copyright law has been violated PERIOD. It does not matter if the burnt DVD was for home use or not.

so until the OP answers the question and I give my response, please do not make assumptions to the merit of my question.

**A: you question has absolutely no merit at all. And YOU are the one making assumptions. Care to make more and prove that you are an ass the second time?

**A: so what. And rebut. Make ass.

I never had any intention for you to have a "need to know." That is why I said it was of personal interest, and the question was directed towards the OP not you. Get out of the freeadvice.com world that you live in and look at it from a realistic point of view. Do you really think that people are going to pursue every notification of copyright infringement? Now, if this guy was making hundreds of copies and selling them for profit, wouldn't it be more prudent for people to pursue this guy? Moreover, read through my follow up posts. Did my question refute anything? No, it was a simple question that obviously you took as a rebuttal, which I still can't figure out why. Do you know what a rebuttal is? Look it up in the dictionary and come back and tell me if I refuted anything by posting my question. Trust me, if I was in dissent and believed that it wasn't a copyright violation, I would have posted stating that in my initial response (read through my other posts on different topics).

YOU are the one making assumptions.

Where did I make an assumption? Again, do me a favor and pull out your dictionary. BOTH OF YOU are making assumptions towards a simple question. Did I ever say that it wasn't a copyright violation? No, that is why YOU are making the assumptions. Just curious..... Are you an educated person (not meant to be derogatory)? If you would like to know the reasoning behind the last question, please inquire further before taking it upon yourself to make assumptions on why I asked.

Care to make more and prove that you are an ass the second time?

Can you rewrite this question? It doesn't make sense. How does asking a question prove that I am an ass? I guess by "make more" you mean further disagree with racer72. Well, I never did that in the first place. Do you think that I just bypass previous replies before posting? Do you think that I did not read through the link he provided? Sounds like I had an alternative motive in regards to my question. I'm just going to go ahead and ask the question again. How is asking the question I posted the same as stating that it isn’t a copyright violation if it is for personal use? It seems like you are the "ass."

**A: so what. And rebut. Make ass.

"make ass"
“And rebut.”

What am I rebutting?

Again, are you educated person? If so, did you attend a top tier school?

I read through your profile and was able to figure out that you are educated (congratulations). If you don't mind me asking, where did you go to undergrad and post grad? Just curious....Don't feel compelled to answer as most probably would not.

For Personal Use

In answer to the question what is the person doing with the copies he made. I am not certain, I am assuming it is for home personal use, but recent happenings with this person make me question everything about him.

I asked the original question because we are trying to find something that will put this guy out of his daughter's life. Every indication shows he is a ruthless liar who is willing to hurt people who trusted him. He originally started out by sending an email out to all of us family members using my sister's email account and typing like he was my sister saying that she was divorcing him. We can all tell she didn't write it because of the way it was written (words, grammar etc.). Since that time he and his new squeeze have been going around town with him introducing the new girl using my sister's full name. Also some checks have been bounced on a checking account that he closed, but they were filled out like my sister wrote them, she did not.

He has done other things that I cannot discuss online, but they involve horrible unspeakable things that he has done to his own daughter. When normal channels were followed on trying to pursue this, they have produced unsatisfactory results. A single federal agency has squashed it because she was too afraid to speak to them, because they were strangers and she is afraid of her father, she had been able to speak to a deputy about it, but unfortunately that deputy had a quadruple bypass a few days after speaking with her so he was not able to be there for the meeting with the agency. This guy and his family are stalking my family, they are definitely stalking by watching the house, it also appears that they are stalking by hijacking my parents' computers. He said in instant messages and emails to my mother, that he knew she was there, because he had taken snapshots of her. My parents live completely on the opposite side of the county from him out in the country, so he and his family have no other reason to be on their road but to be spying on my parents. They have also found hijacking software on their computers, and he set up one of these computers himself so who knows what he put in it. My parents are both in their 70's and living on a meager retirement, my sister is close to being disabled, she had a brain tumor removed about 10 months ago. She is able to work 2-3 times a week maybe, currently not at all because she is in a women's shelter. The first lawyer they hired took the $10,000 retainer and did absolutely nothing, provided them with no court paperwork. They have hired a second lawyer who does seem OK, but they have little money to pay him and so they are stretched very thin.

So at this point we are just grasping at straws to try to get something that will stick on this guy, I just don't know how to turn this over to which law enforcement agency.

I would appreciate your help.

Thank,
MS

?? directed towards Whom?

**A: your question is not relevant to the copyright violation issue. You should talk to an FBI agent.

HomeGuru,
When you answered this and said "You should talk to an FBI agent", was that directed to fronty or me(the OP)?
