The only problem with that assessment LDIJ is that MOM has known or should have known about this testing (if acutually existing) since the beginning of the 8th grade) That is 9 months from the time of the test. If the concern were so prevelant that she had concerns about the child not being returned, or she had paid attention to the order, she would have had ample time to addess her concerns through the proper channels.

As I said earlier, this 11th hour 'concern' is not sufficient grounds to bring a modification petition before the court before the date of the testing.

Mom had the responsibility in this matter and she didn't care enough to do anything about it until now.

Yep. My son also had 8th grade testing this spring. State testing hasn't been a huge issue in the past as it never really meant anything. However, our district uses the results of this testing for placement in HS - so doing well is the difference between the Honors track and regular track. I knew the dates of testing at the start of the school year and addressed the w/e visitation early on with Dad to ensure that he'd be home early enough to get a good night's sleep. (LOL Those of you familiar with my ex know what fun that was!) He did make it into how he was doing me a huge favor, blah blah blah.

But the upshot is - these dates aren't set at the last minute. Nor are the apparent problems with Dad new. The key at this point is to try and get Dad to be reasonable about it, but to also develop a back-up plan by talking to the kid's guidance counselor. They can sort out make-up testing, and are generally very understanding about visitation issues.

All right, I'm curious here. BB looked up the Regents exams. Sadmom keeps screaming that it's not the regents exams, but some state mandated tests. I am also in NY and the only tests according to my calendar (for June) are 6/7 and 6/8 Grade 8 Social Studies testing, 6/12 thru 6/14 are local exams and 6/15 thru 6/23 are the regents exams. What state mandated test is this if I don't have it in my area?

OK, I thought perhaps that I was missing something. I wanted to put that in the other thread but it closed while I was typing it up. Also, if I remember correctly cause it's been 12 years since I was in school, aren't regents set up by subject? If the child isn't taking that subject scheduled for that day of testing then they wouldn't be taking that particular exam. I find it hard to believe that this child would be testing for the entire 2 weeks esp for an 8th grader.

I discussed this issue with the Department of Education the office of thomas schoeck and was informed that there are NO tests required for an 8th grader to enter High School.

There are Regents and local testing for placement however, those are voluntary depending on the court track of the student.

I have another phone conference with them on Monday because this I want to make sure the information in this thread is correct.

Having been in NY since the age of two and having my own child in the NY school system, this is info I'll be looking forward to having. I just don't remember what people are talking about. I don't remember ANY kind of placement exams, but that could be because I went to a "smart kid" school and our curriculum was advanced.

As a note - the testing I was talking about is in NJ, and the use of results for HS placement may be local. The kids were too young when we lived in NYS to worry about testing.

Don't worry, I remembered that you were in NJ.

Wow, I'm confused.

All this talk of testing for 'placement' and what 'track' the kid is gonna be on... it's all foreign to me. I've never heard of placement exams for high school, nor the other types of tests y'all are talking about. Is this just not something we have in the midwest? When I was in high school, we decided what 'track' we were on by whether or not we signed up for AP classes, not based on an exam.

And HOW can an exam determine whether or not a child gets into HS if they passed 8th grade?

My daughter had to take some exams to determine what classes she could sign up for...And if she had missed them she would have been place in CP1 instead of AP...Big difference when colleges are looking at you. Her GPA is 4.135....that wouldn't be possible unless she was in AP.
When I was a kid we had College courses and Business courses...no AP...(dating myself here!!)

Ok, it's still weird to me, because when I was in HS if we wanted to take AP classes, we just signed up for them. Perhaps there was some testing for the remedial type classes, and I'm just not aware of it.

Still, I guess the thing I'm finding most difficult to believe is that the kid in the original thread will be denied access to high school at all, and be forced to repeat 8th grade if these exams aren't taken on the specific day.

That's why I questioned it. I live in NY and she keeps stating that they are state mandated tests which would mean they should be on my calendar and they are not. The only thing listed for the week of 6/19 is the Regents exams.
