True mental illness tends to demonstrate itself in the late teens and early twenties, just a function of growth, age and maturity levels. This child has had "mental illness" diagnoses all over the place, sounds like from a very early age, yet no serious action has been taken to make sure she takes meds. A lot of what is being described is nothing except some very obnoxious behavior, such as beating up her brother on the bus, threatening her parent with a knife, cutting herself, trying to choke herself????(I must admit, this one sounds very strange and dramatic to me, and I've seen a lot!) But we can't sit far away from this situation and try to figure out anything until the OP comes back, if ever, and provides more information. We're already firm on that she can't put her child up for adoption.

These behaviors are not simply obnoxious, they are indicators of some potential very serious mental health issues.
The teen is a danger to others, and probably a danger to herself.

**the trying to choke one's self? It can be used as a type of "high"---you've gotten a "head rush" before?

While you're not incorrect, autoerotic asphyxiation isn't so common amongst teens.

Then again ....

No matter what though, this teen needs serious help. Just like you said.

oh...my mind didn't even go there. Worked with a kid who routinely would just choke himself for the rush. Had nothing to do with erotic. It had started as a dare from his peers, and he enjoyed the rush....Yeah, he had other issues.:(

When teenagers choke themselves it isn't autoerotic, it's just for the head rush, they haven't discovered its "erotic" pleasure possibility yet.

My classmates would play this game in class. Breath deep 12 times then choke yourself till u almost pass out. Good fun apparently. I see it going around occasionally when I'm monitoring my teenagers Facebook. Sometimes it's just teenagers being stupid teenagers.

Uh....and where exactly do you think the eroticism comes from?

You guessed it - it's from the lack of oxygen.

If you somehow think that some teenagers don't realize that, I don't know what to tell you. Open a book, maybe? Read some autopsy reports? I dunno.

They come to realize that. They don't start out doing it for sexual pleasure. They start out doing it for fun.

And didn't you just say autoerotic asphyxiation isn't common in teens? Yea pretty sure you did. That's because their experimentation hasn't advanced to sexual pleasure yet.

LOL Yeah - go on the Internet, dearie. You might learn something.

If I have any cred that I'd like to claim it is based on many years and education in mental health field, working with primarily what I jokingly called "evil children." (I have worked many places. I am older than dirt!) But many others here also have plenty of credentials and experience in this and other related fields. My answers and comments are sometimes instinctual, based on what is left in, what is left out of posts, filtered through my subjective experience. And as we always say, worth exactly what you pay for it. People are pretty nice to me, I try to be pretty nice to everyone too.

I'm glad some toughlove worked for you, and I do agree with you that sometimes it has more to do with controllable behaviors that are just not being controlled than it does with irresistible impulses brought on by disease processes. It sounds as though, in this situation, there is no one who is willing to take the job on in the OP's immediate family in a mature way. Once the child was identified as having these behavior problems, the relatives send her home posthaste. But I also notice the mother, who is willing to Baker act her child many times, isn't willing to press charges. Strange to me. And that she'd ask about putting the child up for adoption. That's a fun fantasy I bet many parents have had!

I agree, choking oneself is a thing that kids do, in the same way and for the same reasons that they huff things, sniff paint and spin around in circles, it gives a brain rush. But I had a mental picture of this child saying, "Stand back, I'll choke myself!" with own hands around the throat. (Anybody see Blazing Saddles?)

Nothing to do with post count. Has to do with the CONTENT of posts in the poster's history. I still disagree with commentator here, but she's still proven herself as a valuable asset to this site and can have reasonable discussions about things.

Thank you! I like to have documentation that I'm reasonable!:)

Honestly we've seen this story posted so many times here, and the fact that OP has not been back, I doubt that it's a real situation anyway.

Just interesting that attacks here aren't based on the content of the post, but the post count of the user....On a legal site....

Not an attack. But when I read commentator's responses, there is a lot more knowledge going on there than when I read yours. SO sorry that you have fewer posts to read. But when you post idiocy, expect to get called on it. I have been/was. commentator has been/was. Most everyone here has been/was. SO untwist your panties, put on some boxers or tightie whities, and get over yourself. Really.

And this is a legal site. But even those of us who are ATTORNEYS have been argued with and called on what is seen as idiocy. We who are attorneys ON A LEGAL SITE even admit when you are wrong, screwed the pooch, posted incorrectly and what have you. Deal with it.
(Take that in the manner in which it was attended. NO, I AM NOT into bestiality. Though I have grown accustomed to a certain sea creature at this point.)
