I know nothing about feline diabetes, but in humans a person checks their blood-sugar before even administering an insulin shot. Is it not the same for animals?Gevalia said:OP: from my experience, I think you may have misunderstood the vet’s instructions.
My fifteen year old, ten pound cat has diabetes for which we administer two units of insulin twice a day, using 3/10 cc syringes. The box states it is for U-100 insulin. One syringe = 30 units, and 100 units = 1 cc. I can’t imagine any cat being prescribed 20 cc’s.
I have never heard of there being different “degrees” of diabetes (other than Type 1 and Type 2) but I am not a medical professional, so I will leave it to RMet, Panzer, or someone else more knowledgeable than I to acknowledge whether 20 cc’s, considering my cat’s dosage, seems like an extremely unlikely prescription.
Also, we use Humulin-U (sp) insulin. I don’t know what the difference is between that and U40.
The only facts I have are that my cat has diabetes, we use Humulin-U, and he gets 2 units BID so my ignorance outweighs my knowledge concerning feline diabetes, but I seem to be the only other one with a diabetic cat and wanted to offer this for consideration.

Job_Hunting said:You all can bash me now, I'm the stupid OP who killed my cat.
Job_Hunting said:Gevalia,
Oh my goodness, no. No one's posts were offensive in anyway, definitely not yours. (To me anyway, haha...I've seen the fight going on here).
You all have been wonderful. Well I'm certainly wiser now because of this, but I will always have that guilt. I was too ignorant at the time to force the vet to be more clear. I had no idea of the consequences. Well, now I do. Quite the lesson, eh?
Thanks for taking the time to respond--![]()
