Fake checks are always a major problem, even fake money orders, certified checks, etc. Counterfeiters are good these days. Even fake travelers checks are floating around.

Do you still have the buyers cellphone number or home number. They must have called you. If you have a cellular, look on your phone bill and find the number as they are generally all logged. This would help.

The police dept should be able to do a VIN search while you are processing a report with them for the bad check.
