Non-smoker here. But I still think smoking outside does not cause the same amount of odor as sitting around marinating in smoke for a couple of hours.
So they smell like half an ashtray. It's still stinks.

Some of us like to be able to go out to bars and nightclubs without coming home smelling like an ashtray.
More importantly, it's a serious hazard to all the bartenders and waitresses who are in those bars and nightclubs for 40 hours a week or more. Yes, lots of them smoke, but plenty don't, and I've seen studies that showed a higher risk of cancer EVEN FOR THE SMOKERS who work in a secondhand smoke heavy environment compared with other smokers who don't. (sadly, I no longer have the citation for this though, it was a while ago) The public health aspect was more convincing to me then the personal comfort aspect.
If you are a bartender by trade, and there is not a smoking ban in effect in the city or state where you live, it is likely that you have very little choice to find work in a non-smoking establishment, there just aren't that many out there. I don't want to ban smoking itself, or any other risky/dangerous substances/behaviors. I'm actually a supporter of legalization/decriminalization of most illegal drugs. If the only person you're hurting is yourself, then I think you should be able to do pretty much whatever you want. I only think smoking should be banned where it significantly impacts the HEALTH (not just comfort) of anyone other then the person actually smoking at that very moment. Casual exposure to secondhand smoke doesn't significantly impact anyone's health, but regular, long term exposure to high levels of it definitely does. And honestly, having to step outside the door to light up is a MINOR inconvenience, in the grand scheme of things. No one is controlling when, how much, how often one can smoke, nor what brand/type of cigarrettes. No one is banning SMOKERS from their businesses. The inconvenience is very small compared to the potential benefits to public health, so in this case, I support the regulation.
To add to my last post, I don't like looking at large women dressed in tight clothes so let's ban that. I also find other peoples loud music annoying so we should ban that also. I don't like hunting so it too should be banned. Not liking the smell of something is no reason to ban it from private property. If it's the health issues, then let's make everything unhealthy illegal!
Just had to comment, spandex REALLY should come with a legal load limit, and at least 90% of the people wearing it currently exceed it
As for not liking hunting, come visit my farm for a week, watch all the deer eating all the crops and see it as $$$ leaving your pocket and you'll change your mindBTW, all animals harvested from our property are used for consumption.

From a health standpoint, let's ban all fattening foods, liquor, all tobacco products, fast cars, motorcycles, sports, and most non essential travel. Then we can all be safe!
My point was that we keep passing laws against things that people don't like, even though they really are none of the governments business. If you're the owner of a business, you should be able to decide what takes place there as long as it's legal.
Let's keep in mind that the laws are passed to protect other people. If you smoke in my presence, you are forcing me to "smoke" as well. If you want to smoke in your own home, fine, go to it. I don't care. But you do not have the right to inflict second hand smoke on me.
If I enter your home, knowing that you are a smoker, that is a choice that I make. But the bartenders and the waiters and the waitresses and the busboys, etc., should not have to choose between their health and their job. Why do you think domestic air travel is now smoke free?
The ban is not to protect you. It's to protect the people you are affecting.

Everyone has a choice except the owner of the business which is on private property!
