Yes, I realize what this will do to my Mother and step Dad. At least I waited until I was grown up and had a family before making the choice. I'm the one with an established life that has to change all the government paperwork and all my job stuff. That in itself is going to be a lot of work.

I just talked to my older sister and she said they never did an adoption they did a name change on me and my sisters.

you should be able to go to the court where the name change was done and get a copy of the papers. If this is all that it was, it is an easy fix.
I did a name change myself years ago when I wanted to hypenate and never even got an atty.
I went to the clerk's office and they had a form you filled out. Then I went before the judge and explained why I wanted it and he signed it.
Very easy

I was able to reverse an adoption with my mother's consent, FACT. It was painless and empowering. Try it. Don't listen to these people who say you can't.

I normally do not post that often in forums, but wanted to add to this conversation because it hits very close to home. I was doing some research online and came across this particular forum. My heart goes out to him and I can understand why he may want to go back and undo what was done. We do not know the circumstances surrounding his life around this person and where he has come from since. I was also adopted by a "step parent" It was not by choice. I was 13 and had to approve it. I did not want to, but was told if I did not, she would make sure my dad was thrown in jail and I would never see him again...so, I signed the paper. The worst day of my life. Once this paper was signed, we had to call him dad. It was clear the only reason it was done was for tax purposes. Not that we were wanted. This man was a psychical and sexual abuser. I hated him, and the fact as I got older I was walking around with his last name. I maintained a relationship with my dad during this time. My mom did a sealed adoption, have no idea why. Because of this, I cannot get any of the records. The lawyer that was used passed away and then it was passed down to his son, who passed away in a car accident. This man who adopted us has since passed away and so has my mother. I hate the fact that legally on my children's birth certificates as my maiden name I have to use his. I want to change this on their certificates and want to reverse this adoption. I never wanted it in the first place, I was forced to sign the papers. Yes, I do feel the child should have a say, not only that, but I also feel the judge should also talk to these kids and hear them out. I wonder how many more of them are out there like myself and this this gentlemen on this forum:(

First, a 13 year old is not required to sign adoption papers.

Second, 'they did it for tax reasons' makes no sense. If Mom was the custodial parent, then stepfather adopting you would have no impact on taxes.

I was there, I know...I had to sign it. The thought was at the time on parent adoption, the child could have some sort of voice at a certain age. I had to agree saying that I would like to have this man as my adoptive father. What the laws are today regarding this, I do not know. As far as tax reasons, depending on the situation around it, it makes perfect sense. If that adoptive parent is paying child support for his own children from a previous marriage...this will help him out greatly. Also, depending on the agreement of the divorce papers of the custodial parent and how this was set up, that also plays a part in it. Money was a huge factor in this. From my end of it, I do know what I am talking about, I have been round and round with it. Something that has this kind of impact on someones life, you know something went wrong somewhere. I think in cases like that, the courts should at least look at it and give us a chance to correct it.

Actually, I was not. Same story, different member. I was just contributing and stating my view point. It does not seem like other points of view is very accepted here though...:( I am sorry, I did not realize that before I posted.
